Oklahoma now no longer Oklahoma

Congrats to the folks in Oklahoma who have finally decided that injection wells can cause earthquakes as they shut in a well close to a M4.1 earlier in the week. Notably, they did this despite the typical denial from industry-hired consultant Dick, who “told the commission [in a permitting meeting in November] he had examined well logs for the area and ‘determined that there is no faulting in the immediate area.’ He said ‘the recent seismic activity in this area appears to be naturally occurring’ and the injection well’s operation would not trigger earthquakes in the area.” One could hope that this consultant’s credibility has taken a bit of a hit. (You are unlikely to find faults in well logs; they are more typically located with seismic profiling unless you are talking some of the really big faults with 100s of meters of throw).
