Citation citations

Neat article in Slate on how damaging bad citation practices are (using as key example the origins of the increase in opioid prescriptions that have now led to this abuse crisis) (thanks, RetractionWatch, for the pointer). Go read it.  GG’s already sounded off a few times on the mystery of lousy citation practices here and here, so we’ll just leave it at that.

Careless reading as well as careless citing. “We conclude that despite widespread use of narcotic drugs in hospitals, the development of addiction is rare in medical patients with no history of addiction.” Perfectly clear that the study refers specifically to “use of narcotic drugs in hospitals“, by implication for limited periods and with close supervision.

Yes, games of academic telephone have an element of misreading or misunderstanding something along the way. This example is unusually clear because the source material was so short.
